De film Hugo van Martin Scorsese is door de National Board of Review verkozen tot beste film van het jaar. Martin Scorsese werd ook benoemd tot beste regisseur. De NBR is traditioneel de eerste belangrijke organisatie die laat weten wat zij zien als beste film van het jaar.

Tot beste acteur werd George Clooney verkozen voor zijn rol in The Descendants. Tilda Swinton was volgens de recensenten de beste actrice voor haar rol in We Need to Talk About Kevin.
